![]() Notably, NHTSA forced Tesla to recall 362,758 of its vehicles equipped with the software, after which an over-the-air update was required. Highly rated by IIHS and NHTSA, the 3 gets good marks for safety and comes with a host of highly effective active-safety features, but the much-hyped “Full Self-Driving” option remains a pricey mirage. The back seat is also tight, though no worse than most competitors or conventional compact luxury sedans like the BMW 3 Series. ![]() You do acclimate to it, but a few buttons, knobs and a head-up display would make it a better experience. As minimal as a modern luxury car interior can be, the 3’s screen-dominated, airy but austere cabin looks cool but isn’t to everyone’s tastes. But accessing anything in this car means going through the 15-inch touchscreen, and way too many functions are routed through it. In other metrics, like cargo volume and features, the 3 also stands out. ![]() The third version, Long Range, offers 4.2 seconds acceleration and 325-mile range (down from 358 with a new battery configuration), and just became available to order for June 2023 delivery. They can charge overnight at home like other EVs, but on-the-go charging is superior with the automaker’s Supercharger network, which is just starting to expand to non-Teslas. The ultra-hot Performance can go up against a BMW M3 Competition and still return 315 miles on a charge. Even the base model RWD will hit 50 mph in under 6 seconds and go 272 miles on a charge. There are, appropriately, three versions of the 3, and all are excellent performers. The Tesla Model 3’s distinct shape still sets a standard for EV style, and it hides a huge trunk and capacious front cabin. The 3 still bests most EVs in many categories, but most of them offer more conventional interiors and ownership experiences (such as dealerships) which some people prefer. For 2023 the Model 3 gets its strongest-ever challenger in the Hyundai Ioniq 6, especially when it comes to range, price and style. Many more challengers have emerged since, including the Polestar 2 and BMW i4. When new in 2017, the 3 really stood out as the longest-range “affordable” EV with only the Chevy Bolt EV as close competition, though the 3 has always had a much more premium bent than the tiny Chevy. But mostly the Model 3 is largely as it was in 2022. Some new features are available like Apple Music and trip planning on the Tesla app. The Long Range is now $47,240 (down from $49,190 before it was pulled). Pricing is down with the rear-wheel drive entry-level Model 3 slashed to $40,240 (without the increased $1,390 destination fee) and the dual-motor AWD Performance starts at $53,240. ![]() It was reintroduced in early May with a different battery type and lower range from when it was last available in August 2022. Tesla doesn’t release cars by model year, but 2023 sees some changes with the first quarter missing the Long Range. Even so, while the price might fluctuate and the silhouette is very familiar, the Model 3 still offers an excellent value proposition. This unconventional car is not for everyone though recent price drops have made it more enticing to leary EV adopters. Technically it has three versions (the AWD Long Range returned in early May after an eight-month pause) that offer more range and better performance than most challengers, and Tesla’s Supercharger network remains a major advantage in the real world. These fees and commissions do not influence the amount a customer pays. With more EVs nipping at its heels, the Tesla Model 3 still remains at the top of the electric vehicle pack.
